<p>The Woodstock Warren Through Truss Bridge was a historic iron bridge that carried Bridges Road  across the Ottauquechee River in western Woodstock, Vermont. The bridge was built in 1925, and was a rare example of the state of a double-intersection Warren through truss. The bridge was swept away by flooding caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Woodstock Warren Through Truss Bridge stood in western Woodstock, roughly midway between the villages of West Woodstock and Bridgewater. The Ottaquechee River flows east in this area, and its route is closely paralleled on the north by USA Route 4 (US 4) On the southern side of the river, Bridges Road runs west from the West Woodstock Bridge, and now ends at the point where this bridge once stood. The bridge was a single-span structure 121 ft long, with a roadway width of 12.2 ft and a portal clearance of 16.4 ft. The bridges supporting Warren trusses deviated from typical instances of the form by having additional diagonal members that increased the bridges carrying capacity.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was probably built in 1925, when the town was making a number of improvements to its transportation infrastructure. The bridge survived Vermont&#39;s devastating floods of 1927, but was washed away in 2011 by floods caused by the remnants of Hurricane Irene.</p><br>
<p>Slade Castle is a tower house and National Monument located in County Wexford, Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Slade Castle is located in the village of Slade, near the tip of the Hook Peninsula, 1.7 km northeast of Hook Head Lighthouse.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The original fort was built by the Laffin (Laffan) family in the late 15th century. The fortified two-storied hall was added in the 16th century also adding crenellations. The Laffin estate was quite small, 86 hectare. This suggests that other sources of revenue, such as fishing or trade, must have funded the castle.</p><br>
<p>The Laffins lost Slade after the 1641 Rebellion. It was used for storage by the salt works until the 19th century, when that the castle was converted into tenement housing. When the castle was taken over by the Office of Public Works in the 1940s the castle was restored to its old condition.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The earliest part of the castle is the four-storey-tall tower. The ground and third floors have vaulted ceilings, with Irish crenelations on the parapet, where there are excellent views of Bannow Bay and Waterford Harbour, important for defence. The entrance doorway is protected by a machicolation and murder-hole. A fireplace and garderobe survive on the second level. The three ground-floor rooms cannot be entered from the living quarters above and may have been used as warehouses.</p><br>
<p>The hall is two storeys tall, with entrance protected by a murder-hole. There is a large fireplace at the west end and an oubliette in the south wall. A mural staircase leads to the upper floor.</p><br>
<p>The Tunbridge Village Historic District encompasses the early 19th-century village center of Tunbridge, Vermont. Stretched linearly along Vermont Route 110, the largely agricultural village reached its peak population around 1820, and was bypassed by the railroads, limiting later development. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The main village of Tunbridge (chartered 1761) was settled in the 1780s, beginning with the construction of a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of the First Branch White River in 1785. With the village adjacent to fertile bottomlands along the river, it developed as an agricultural center, and a brickyard was opened in 1820, providing building materials for several local buildings. The village was bypassed during the construction of railroads during the 19th century, but was able to maintain an agricultural economy due to its relative proximity to the station in nearby Royalton. In 1847, the village inaugurated the Tunbridge World&#39;s Fair, which has been held at fairgrounds in the village since 1875. The result of this economic history is a collection of buildings, most of which were built before 1840.</p><br>
<p>The historic district, which covers most of the village, extends mainly along Vermont 110, the principal artery along the First Branch White River. Its southern boundary is Howe Lane (Town Highway 45), and its northern boundary is beyond Spring Road. It includes properties along a number of side streets, including Strafford Road and Spring Street. The latter is where the Hayward and Kibby Mill and the Mill Covered Bridge are located. Most of the buildings are modest wood frame houses, in either Federal or Greek Revival styles, although there are few houses with later Gothic and Italianate features, and a few are built of brick. The village is also home to a number of municipal buildings, as well as several churches. The fairgrounds are located on the west side of Vermont 110, where a bend in the river is not matched by the roadway. The fairground retains a number of well-preserved 19th-century buildings.</p><br>
<p>Helsby War Memorial was built to commemorate the servicemen of Helsby lost in active service in the First World War. It was unveiled in 1920, and the names of those lost in the Second World War were added later. The memorial stands in the churchyard of St Paul&#39;s Church in Helsby, Cheshire, England, and consists of a Celtic cross in sandstone on a pedestal and steps. On the shaft of the cross is an inscription and on the pedestal are the names of those lost in the conflicts. The war memorial is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.</p><br>
<h2>Location and history</h2><br>
<p>The war memorial is sited in the churchyard of St Paul&#39;s Church on a platform overlooking the A56 road. It was designed by R. H. Lockwood, made by W. Heswall and Son, and its cost of £350 was met by the parishioners of the church. The memorial was unveiled on 25 April 1920 by J. Taylor J. P. and by the Revd. E. W. Evans. After the Second World war the names of those lost in that conflict were added. In 2005–06 the memorial was conserved with the help of a grant from the War Memorials Trust, and in 2012 it was refurbished by the local authority.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The memorial is built in sandstone, it is about 5 m high, and consists of a Celtic cross with a broad tapering shaft. The shaft is on a rectangular pedestal on a base of three steps, the whole standing on a platform. The front of the wheel-head of the cross and the shaft are decorated with complex vine patterns in relief. On the front of the shaft is an inscription, and on the pedestal are the names of to 20 servicemen lost in the First World War, and the 17 lost in the Second World War.</p><br>
<h2>Appraisal</h2><br>
<p>The memorial was designated as a Grade II listed building on 13 September 2016. Grade II is the lowest of the three grades of listing, and is applied to "buildings are of special interest". The reasons for designating this building are its historic interest "as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the 20th century&quot its architectural interest as being "an intricately carved cross in the Celtic style&quot and its group value with St Paul&#39;s Church and the lychgate also in the churchyard, both of which are listed at Grade II.</p><br>
<p>Field Farm is a historic farm property on Fuller Mountain Road in Ferrisburgh, Vermont. Developed around the turn of the 19th century, the property includes an early farmhouse and barn, as well as outbuildings representative of Vermont&#39;s trends in agriculture over two centuries. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Field Farm is located in rural eastern Ferrisburgh, on the west side of Fuller Mountain Road. The property consists of about 83 acre, bounded on the east by Fuller Mountain Road and the north by a now-disused former town road. The eastern two-thirds of the property consists of open fields, while the western third, located across a brook that feeds Little Otter Creek, is mostly wooded. Most of the farm&#39;s buildings are located in a cluster near the road at the northeast corner of the property. The house is a 1-1/2 story Cape style structure, with a side gable roof and clapboarded exterior. It is unusual for its seven-bay width, which includes two doorways framed by Greek Revival surrounds. It has high knee walls on the upper level, a characteristic typical of early Addison County Capes. Also on the property are two English barns, one contemporaneous to the house, three smaller 19th-century outbuildings, and a 20th-century silo.</p><br>
<p>The farm is one of the original farmsteads to be developed along Fuller Mountain Road. Its original developer, Archibald Collins, acquired the property in 1787, and the farmhouse may well have been built by him around 1807. In the 1830s it was given the Greek Revival styling it now has, and it is possible the house dates to that period as well. The two-story storage barn dates to the same period as the house, while the three-story dairy barn was added about 1850, when dairy farming came into vogue.</p><br>
<p>The Union Village Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge, carrying Academy Road across the Ompompanoosuc River in Union Village, Thetford, Vermont. Built in 1867, it is the state&#39;s longest 19th-century multiple kingpost truss bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Union Village Covered Bridge stands in southern Thetford, in rural Union Village, spanning the south-flowing Ompompanoosuc River on Academy Road. It is a single-span multiple kingpost truss structure, 113 ft long with portals that flare outward. It rests on original abutments of dry-laid stone that have been faced or capped in concrete. It is 19 ft wide, with a roadway width of 15 ft (one lane). The floor supports consist of stringers that have been tie-bolted together, reinforced in the 20th-century by the addition of laminated beams to the underside. The exterior is finished in vertical board siding, with square window openings cut into the sides. The roof is made of standing seam metal.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was built in 1867, and is one of two surviving 19th-century covered bridges in Thetford; the other is the Thetford Center Covered Bridge. The bridge underwent a major rehabilitation in 2002-2003. It is the state&#39;s longest multiple kingpost truss bridge.</p><br>
<p>The Ethan Allen Homestead is a historic house museum at 1 Ethan Allen Homestead in Burlington, Vermont. It was built about 1787 by Ethan Allen, and is the only surviving residence of his in the state. It is open to the public annually from May to October. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.</p><br>

<p>Ethan Allen (1738-1789) is widely revered as one of Vermonts greatest early public figures. Born in Connecticut, he speculated extensively with his brothers and other extended family members in land in Vermont, and was an instrumental figure in securing the territorys independence from New York and its eventual statehood. In his later years he settled on a farm of 1,400 acre in the Winooski River valley, and probably built this house a few years before his death. In the 19th and 20th centuries the property was owned by others, but was generally recognized as having been Allen&#39;s. In the late 1980s a surviving remnant of the farm property was turned into a park and museum.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The house is a modest 1-1/2 story post-and-beam structure, with a gable roof and clapboarded exterior. Its main facade is three bays wide, with a center entrance framed by simple molding and topped by a four-light transom window and cornice. The interior of the house follows a Georgian central-chimney plan, although the original massive brick chimney has been removed. The house is set on the floodplain of the Winooski River, between it and Vermont Route 127.</p><br>

<p>Roodstown Castle is a rectangular tower house of four storeys with small turrets at diagonally opposed corner: a spiral stairway in the SE and garderobes in the NW.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Souterrains are underground cave-like structures built as places of refuge and storage, and in Ireland they date between the 8th and 12th centuries.</p><br>
<p>The souterrain was discovered in 1960 during the construction of a Louth County Council cottage. It was excavated by Etienne Rynne who found trenches, a pit, two post-holes. sherds of souterrain ware, a bronze pin, a whetstone and iron slag.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The souterrain at Donaghmore is a complex of underground tunnels lined with dry stone walls, floors and ceilings, with corbels and lintels. The ceilings are over 1 m in height and the total length of tunnel is 80 m. It is largely dug into boulder clay but also into Silurian grit.</p><br>
<p>The old town in Plovdiv is an architectural and historical reserve located on three of Plovdiv&#39;s hills: Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe.</p><br>
<p>The complex has been formed as a result of the long sequence of habitation from prehistoric times to present day and combines the culture and architecture from Antiquity, Middle Ages and Bulgarian revival. The old town in Plovdiv is included in UNESCO World Heritage tentative list since 2004.</p><br>
<h2>Ancient monuments</h2><br>
<h3>Nebet Tepe</h3><br>
<p>Nebet Tepe is one of the hills of Plovdiv where the ancient town was founded. The earliest settlements on Nebet Tepe are dated back to 4000 BC. The site was first settled by Thracians, later expanded by Philip II of Macedon and the Roman empire. As the town expanded, Nebet Tepe became the citadel of the town&#39;s acropolis. There are remains of a fortress walls, towers, and a postern from the time of Justinian leading down to the Maritsa river.</p><br>
<h3>Ancient theatre</h3><br>
<p>The Roman theatre of Plovdiv is one of the world&#39;s best-preserved ancient theatres. It was constructed during Roman Emperor Trajan (reigned 98–117 AD), it can host between 5000 and 7000 spectators and it is currently in use. The theatre is one of the most valuable monuments from the ancient city of Philippopolis.</p><br>
<h3>Hisar Kapia</h3><br>
<p>Hisar Kapia is a medieval gate in Plovdiv&#39;s old town built in the 11th century AD over the foundations of a gate from Roman times (probably from the 2nd century AD). Hisar Kapia is one of the three entrances (Eastern, Northern and Southern) to the acropolis of ancient Philippopolis. During the rule of the Ottoman empire revival houses were embedded in the remains of the old stone walls around the gate.</p><br>
<h3>Eastern gate of Philippopolis</h3><br>
<p>The Eastern gate of Philippopolis is one of the three entrances of the ancient city that have been discovered in Plovdiv. The gate was built on the main road to Byzantium and the Bosphorus. Initially constructed in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Hadrian, the gate and the complex around it were completely rebuilt in the 4th century, and partially repaired in the 5th century. The gate had one wide central entrance and two narrower side entrances. Two watch towers were built on both sides of the gate for protection during attacks.</p><br>
<h2>Revival architecture</h2><br>
<p>Plovdiv became an important economic center during the Revival period in Bulgaria.</p><br>
<h3>Balabanov House</h3><br>
<p>Balabanov house is emblematic for the cultural life in Plovdiv. It hosts numerous events such as theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions, literature readings. The house was built in the 19th century near St. Constantine and Elena square. The wide entrance door leads to a long, high-ceiling vestibule around which the residential and commercial premises are situated. An inner staircase leads to a large, glazed hall with richly ornamented carved-wood ceiling on the second floor. The hall is surrounded by four rooms decorated with restored antique furniture, fabrics and other items demonstrating the taste of the rich citizens of Plovdiv in the 19th century.</p><br>
<h3>Danov House</h3><br>
<p>Danov house is built on the remains of the fortification walls of Philippopolis. The house is named after Hristo G. Danov - the father of organized book publishing in the Bulgaria, who lived in it. The decoration of the interior consists of floral murals, painted medallions, landscapes and portraits of philosophers from Ancient Greece. An authentic brick masonry oven is exhibited. The house hosts an exposition of Plovdiv&#39;s historical museum dedicated to book publishing in Bulgaria in the 19th and the 20th century.</p><br>
<h3>Kuyumdzhioglu House</h3><br>
<p>The house of Argir Hristov Kuyumdzhioglu, a merchant from Plovdiv, was built in 1847. Kuyumdzhioglu was a prominent homespun trader who owned a company in Vienna. The house was constructed by Hadzhi Georgi, from the Rhodopean village of Kosovo, and has been described as a prime example of Plovdivs mid-19th century Baroque architecture. The house has a symmetric facade; it is two stories tall on its west side and four stories tall on its east side, employing the natural denivelation. The Kuyumdzhioglu House spreads over 570 m&sup2;. It has 12 rooms and airy salons and 130 windows. Both the houses interior and exterior decoration rely on sophisticated floral motives. Each room has carved wood ceiling. The house has an inner yard with a garden, a marble fountain and a well. After the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878, Argir Kuyumdzhioglu left Plovdiv to settle in Istanbul (Constantinople). From 1898 to 1902, the house was used as a girls boarding house. Following that it was used by Garabet Karagyozyans millinery factory, as a flour warehouse and as a vinegar factory. In 1930, it was acquired by Hamburg-based, Greek tobacco merchant, Antonio Colaro. Colaro intended to demolish the house and build a tobacco warehouse, but he was denied permission by the Plovdiv municipality. The municipality bought the house in 1838, carried out renovations, and organized the ethnographic museum.</p><br>
<h3>Hindliyan House</h3><br>
<p>The house of the merchant and landowner Stephan Hindliyan was built in 1835. The house is connected to the adjacent Balabanov house making an impressive ensemble of renaissance houses. The forefront entrance is formed by an inward central portico. A rectangular hall is positioned at the center of the ground floor, surrounded by three large rooms. The inside and outside decoration of Hindliyan house is one of the most richly ornamented in Plovdiv&#39;s old town. The master-decorators Moko and Mavrudi from Chirpan worked more than six months on the painting of the walls with wall piers, garlands of floral and geometrical ornaments, vignettes, and landscape compositions from Tsargrad, Venice, Stockholm. The ceilings are painted in Orient patterns. The basement located in the North part of the building was used for valuables keeping. It has solid iron doors and thick window bars. The interior of Hindliyan house is decorated with authentic antique furniture.</p><br>
<h3>Lamartine/Mavridi House</h3><br>
<p>The house of the merchant Georgi Mavridi was built in 1829–1830. It is one of the largest and most symmetrical buildings in Plovdivs old town. The building is adapted to a very rough terrain which indicates the high quality of master builders workmanship. The French poet Alphonse de Lamartine stayed in this house for three days in 1833 on his way back from a journey to the Middle East. Since then, the house is associated with his name. Currently, its hosts an exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the French poet and politician.</p><br>
<p>Fenn Farm is a historic property on Case Street in Middlebury, Vermont. Developed c. 1828 as a sheep farm but now diversified, it now includes a well-preserved collection of mid-19th century farm buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Fenn Farm is located in rural eastern Middlebury, on about 100 acre of land laid out in a relatively narrow strip on either side of Case Street (Vermont Route 116). The landscape consists of rolling hills, divided into a combination of uses, including pasture, agriculture, and woodland. The farm buildings are set in a cluster on the west side of the road. The oldest portion of the farmhouse is a 1-1/2 story Cape style three-bay wood frame structure, built by 1840 (and possibly as early as 1828), with a series of additions to the rear. Farm buildings from the 19th century include a c. 1860 horse barn and granary, and a c. 1880 piggery. Twentieth-century buildings include a hen house, milk house, and circular silo.</p><br>
<p>Land for the farm was first cleared about 1828 by Silas Torrance, who engaged in the raising of sheep. By 1850, the property was owned by Daniel Sessions, and the farm was more diversified, producing grain and dairy products in addition to wool. In 1854 the property was acquired by James Fenn, and it has remained in the hands of his descendants since then. Emphasis on dairy production increased significantly in the early 20th century, and chicken and egg production was furthered by the construction of the hen house in the 1980s.</p><br>
<p>The Waits River School is a historic school building on Vermont Route 25 in the Waits River village of Topsham, Vermont. Now a private residence, it was built in 1914 as a combination district school and Grange hall, serving in those roles until 1972 and 1953, respectively. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for its Colonial Revival architecture and its importance in local educational history.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Waits River School building is located in the rural village of Waits River, a short way west of the West Topsham United Methodist Church on the north side of Vermont Route 25. It is a two story wood frame structure, with a hip roof and clapboarded exterior. A 2-1/2 story gabled section projects from the center of the front facade, with the main entrance at its base. The entry is slightly off-center, and is sheltered by a gabled porch supported by square posts. The exterior is relatively unadorned, its massing, slender corner moulding, and partial gable returns the only major indicators of its Colonial Revival style. The interior is more elaborate, and is reflective of an evolutionary history dictated by changing state requirements for school building standards.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1914 by J.W. Zwicker, replacing a district school that had burned down the previous year. Despite attempts by the town to build it to then-current state standards, it did not meet them, and required some alterations before achieving state certification in 1937. The principal alterations were the addition of banks of windows to improve classroom and lighting, and the improvement of heating, ventilation, and bathroom facilities. The building also housed the local Grange chapter on the second floor until 1953, when that space was adapted for use as a second classroom. The school was closed in 1972, and sold into private ownership.</p><br>
<p>The Apartment Building at 27 and 31 Peru Street and 29 Johnson Street is a historic multiunit residential building in Burlington, Vermont. Built about 1889, it is a good local example of vernacular Queen Anne Victorian architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The building at the southwest corner of Peru and Johnson Streets is a 2-1/2 story wood frame building. The Old North End neighborhood it stands in is just north of Burlingtons central business district, and is densely built with residential buildings. The building is basically rectangular in shape, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. A rectangular gabled section projects from the long east side, facing Johnson Street, with a two-story porch extending to the buildings northeast corner. One entrance from the porch provides access to two of the building&#39;s three units, while the third is accessed from an entrance at the opposite end of the northern facade, sheltered by a metal hood. The skirt of the second-floor porch is finished in scallop-cut shingles. The interior finishes date primarily from the 1960s, although original staircase railings survive.</p><br>
<p>Eli Johnson built this house as part of his development of Johnson Street, begun in 1888. Johnson was a prominent local businessman, with a partnership interest in a printing firm and also in a retail pharmacy on College Street. He began the development during a period when the city&#39;s economic growth had led to housing shortages for working-class families. Early residents of Johnson Street were typically of English or Irish extraction. Originally built as a duplex, it was converted to three units in the early 1960s.</p><br>
<p>Galesville Reservoir is a water storage reservoir in Klamath Mountains of Douglas County, Oregon. The dam was completed in October 1986.</p><br>
<p>This reservoir is the outlet of the Upper Cow Creek Watershed, which contains 47,482.5 acres of land. The dam was proposed in a 1966 research document as a water storage dam, with a targeted completion date of 1975. The dam does not include a fish ladder, so it acts as a complete fish passage barrier.</p><br>
<p>67% of the watershed is owned by the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, with 7% owned by the state and county. The remainder is privately owned. Nearly all of the land (98.7%) is used for forestry. The reservoir has a higher-than-allowed level of mercury as described by the Clean Water Act. Several historic mining claims above the reservoir exist, such as the Red Cloud Mine, which was established to extract mercury from veins of cinnabar.</p><br>
<p>Chief Miwaleta RV Park and Campground, a county park, is located on the shores of the reservoir. The upper portion of the reservoir is a wildlife area.</p><br>
<p>The name "Galesville" comes from a small town in the Cow Creek Valley. The location was a post office established in 1854 with George F. Hall as the first postmaster. It was closed in 1916. Legend has it that the initial two settlers were Gale and Goshen, who named it Galesville.</p><br>

<p>The standing stone, 3 metres high, was erected at an unknown point in the distant past, believed to be during the Bronze Age.</p><br>
<p>This standing stone is traditionally associated with the death of the legendary hero Cúchulainn. Lugaid mac Con Roí has three magical spears made, and it is prophesied that a king will fall by each of them. With the first he kills Cú Chulainns charioteer Láeg; with the second he kills Cú Chulainns horse, Liath Macha; with the third he hits Cú Chulainn, mortally wounding him. Cú Chulainn ties himself to a standing stone — traditionally Clochafarmore ("Stone of the Big Man"), which had been erected to mark the grave of a past great warrior.</p><br>
<p>Cú Chulainn continues to fight his enemies, and it is only when a raven (the traditional form of The Morrígan) lands on his shoulder that his enemies believe he is dead. Lugaid approaches and beheads him, but as he does so the "hero-light" burns around Cú Chulainn and his sword falls from his hand and cuts Lugaid&#39;s hand off. The light disappears only after his right hand is cut off.</p><br>
<p>The region is known as An Breisleach Mór, “The Great Carnage", while the field in which this stone stands is called the Field of Slaughter. In the 1920s a bronze spearhead was found in the field, perhaps showing it to be a genuine ancient battle-site.</p><br>
<p>Lake Mboukou  is a freshwater lake in Epena District, Republic of the Congo.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>It is a small lake located roughly 50 km to the southeast from Lake Tele at 0&deg;57&prime;5&Prime;N latitude, 17&deg;22&prime;45&Prime;E longitude in the north-eastern area of the Republic of the Congo. Lake Mboukou is almost totally surrounded by forest except in its SW shore where the village of Mboukou is located.</p><br>
<h2>Local significance</h2><br>
<p>The 1996 book Congo Journey, by British travel writer Redmond O&#39;Hanlon, mentions this lake as a place with strong spirits according to the local people.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>This lake belongs to the 4,389.6 km&sup2; wetland area of the Réserve Communautaire du Lac Télé/Likouala-aux-Herbes. It is a Ramsar site since 18 July 1998.</p><br>
<p>Mount Rai is a 954.5 m mountain located on the border of Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Saga, Saga Prefecture, Japan.</p><br>

<p>This mountain is a part of the Sefuri Mountain range between Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture. The peak is located on the Fukuoka Prefecture side of the mountain. The grassland that extends below the 950 meter summit is called as Sosogino (層々岐野), the place where the legendary of Empress Jingū still alive. The mountain has an alias name for Mount Sosogi (層々岐岳 Sosogi-dake) which is named after this field. The Ikazuchi-jinja jō-gu is located in the innermost part of the shrine grounds on the top of mountain. Since ancient times, the entire mountain is believed to be the holy mountain of Raijin, also called Raiden, a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology. Therefore it is said to be the name of this mountain.</p><br>

<p>The East Shoreham Covered Railroad Bridge is a historic covered bridge spanning the Lemon Fair River near East Shoreham, Vermont. Built in 1897 by the Rutland Railroad Company, it is the state&#39;s only surviving example of a wooden Howe truss railroad bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The East Shoreham Bridge is located in a rural area of southeastern Shoreham, on the Lemon Fair River. It is located about 0.2 mi west of the Shoreham-Depot Road, and is accessible on foot via the former railroad right-of-way, now (along with the bridge) a state-owned property. It is a single-span Howe truss structure, 109 ft in length, and set on dry-laid stone abutments faced in concrete. The trusses consist of wooden diagonals and iron rod verticals. The bridge has a total width of 20 ft and an internal width of 13.5 ft. The railroad tracks, which have been removed, were original laid directly on the deck timbers. The bridge&#39;s exterior consists of vertical board siding covered by a metal roof.</p><br>
<p>The bridge was built in 1897 by the Rutland Railroad Company for service on its Addison Branch line. Because of the lines relatively light traffic, it was not judged necessary to go to the expense of building an iron bridge, resulting in the construction of one of the states few surviving 19th-century covered railroad bridges. It remained in service until 1951, when the line was abandoned. The state acquired the bridge and surrounding land in 1972.</p><br>
<p>The Wells River Graded School is a historic school building on United States Route 5 in the Wells River village of Newbury, Vermont. Built in 1874, it is one of the state&#39;s finest examples of Second Empire architecture. Now in commercial use, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The former Wells River Graded School building stands set back from Main Street (US 5) on the south side of the village of Wells River, adjacent to the Wells River Congregational Church. It is a 1-1/2 story brick building, with a mansard roof providing a full second story. A tower-like section projects from the center of the front facade, also two stories tall, its roof crested by an iron railing and capped by an open belfry with pyramidal roof. Both the main roof and belfry roof are composed of multicolored slate shingles. The building corners are quoined in brick, and the eaves are studded with paired Italianate brackets. Entrances are set flanking the central projecting, under hip-roof porches, also with multicolor slate roofs. The interior plan has two classrooms on each floor, with separate stairwells in the two western corners.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1874. Although its architect is not documented, the building is stylistically similar to others designed by Lambert Packard in St. Johnsbury. The building was adapted to commercial and community uses in the mid-1970s.</p><br>
<p>The Martin M. Bates Farmstead is a historic farm property on Huntington Road in Richmond, Vermont. Farmed since the 1790s, the property is now a well-preserved example of a mid-19th century dairy farm, with a fine Italianate farmhouse. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Bates Farmstead is located in a rural area of southern Richmond, on 45 acre stradding Huntington Road south of its junction with Hillview Road. The area on either side of the road are open fields, which give way to wooded hills behind. The farm complex is also divided by the road, with the house and a chicken house on the northeast side and a large barn and icehouse on the opposite side. The farmhouse is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a side gable roof and ells extending to the right side and rear. It has elaborate Italianate stylistic elements, including paired brackets in the eaves and porches supported by paneled posts. The southeast ell, the oldest portion of the house, retains features original to its construction in the 1820s.</p><br>
<p>The property was acquired by Solomon Bates in 1793, who probably began farming it not long after. None of its early buildings survive; the house wing was probably built in the 1820s by Solomon&#39;s son Elihu. The main block of the house dates to the 1850s, and the large barn complex to the 1890s. The house underwent a major restyling about 1880 by Martin Bates, under whose ownership the farm reached its greatest extent, more than 350 acre. The farm remained in Bates family ownership until 1986, with no new buildings added after 1930. The property remains a fine example of a late 19th-century dairy operation.</p><br>
<p>Lisnaran Fort is a ringfort  and National Monument located in County Louth, Ireland.</p><br>

<p>Lisnaran contains the remains of circular and a rectangular structures, and may have featured more extensive defences outside the main enclosure. It was historically associated with the Viking longphort Linn Duachaill, bu the combination of a hillfort with round and rectangular structures suggests a Gaelic Irish origin. The only find at Lisnaran was a wooden box in 1928, containing twelve silver pennies, all dating from 1279–1315 and from the reign of Edward I or Edward II as Lord of Ireland.</p><br>
<p>Aghnaskeagh Cairns is a chambered cairn and portal tomb forming a National Monument in County Louth, Ireland.</p><br>

<h3>Portal tomb</h3><br>
<p>The northern cairn is a dolmen (portal tomb) with the capstone missing. Two portal stones (2.8 m / 9 ft high) and a back stone remain. Six Bronze Age cist burials were later added. Archeologists found potsherds, cremated bone, food vessels and a blue glass bead on the site, as well as the remains of blackberries under one of the cists, presumably as grave-goods.</p><br>
<h3>Chambered cairn</h3><br>
<p>The southern cairn is a chambered cairn with four cists at the eastern end. Excavations revealed cremated bone, potsherds and scrapers. A burial was also made here in the early Christian era.</p><br>
<p>Folehaveskoven, or Folehave Skov, is a forest in Hørsholm on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is part of a complex of smaller woodlands which also comprises Rungsted Hegn to the north, Deputatvang and Øster Sandbjerg to the south. It is bisected by the east-west running Folehavevej and is to the east bounded by the Coast Line.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The forest used to belong to Hirschholm Palace. The estate comprised some 60 fishing ponds which supplied the royal household with freshwater fish. One of them was Kongens Dam ("King&#39;s Pond") which according to records from 1751 could "take" 1,000 carps (karper) and 3,000 s (karusser). The pond was drained in the 1780s.</p><br>
<h2>Ecology</h2><br>
<p>Golehaven consists mainly of Beech trees. The forest covers an undulating terrain with many boggy depressions.Friese&#39;s Meadow in the northeastern section was recreated in 1995. Researchers from Hørsholm Arboretum has experimented with planting of different trees in some areas.</p><br>
<p>The Danish Nature Agency has worked with Environmental restoration in Folehaveskoven since the 1990s. The King&#39;s Pond was recreated in 2014. It has a water surface of approximately 15,000 square metres and is two to three metres deep. The lake is located next to Folehavevej and Folehavegård. It contains a small island.</p><br>
<h2>Landmarks</h2><br>
<h3>Linstow's grave</h3><br>
<p>Folehaveskoven is the site of Christoph Hartwig von Linstow&#39;s grave. He had become Danish chief forester on 5 April 1894, a position he held until his death on 12 April 1823. Together with G. W. Brüel og C. A. C. Claussen, he was responsible for carrying out great improvements to the management of the Danish state forests.</p><br>
<h3>Prehistoric sites</h3><br>
<p>Folehaveskoven contains some 60 prehistoric monuments. Most are well-preserved burial mounds from the Bronze Age (c. 1000 BC). These mounds are located in small groups in a two kilometre wide band along the coast. The forest also features a number of dolmens from the earliest Stone Age, some 5000 years ago, the largest of which is 42 metres long. There are also a few stone mounds dating from the Iron Age. The most notable monuments in the forest are signposted.</p><br>
<h2>Recreational use</h2><br>
<p>A 3.5 km walk is marked with yellow dots on the trees. Hørsholm Equestrian Centre is located on Folehavevej in direct association with the forest and it is therefore also popular with riders.</p><br>
<p>The Campanian Ignimbrite eruption  was a major volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean during the late Quaternary, classified at 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index . The event has been attributed to the Archiflegreo volcano, the 13 km caldera of the Phlegraean Fields, located 20 km west of Mount Vesuvius under the western outskirts of the city of Naples and the Gulf of Pozzuoli, Italy. Estimates of the date, magnitude and the amount of ejected material have varied considerably during several centuries of investigation. This applies to most significant volcanic events that originated in the Campanian Plain, as it is one of the most complex volcanic structures in the world. However, continued research, advancing methods and accumulation of volcanological, geochronological, and geochemical data has amounted to ever more precise dating.</p><br>
<p>The most recent dating determines the eruption event at 39,280±110 years BP and results of 3D Ash Dispersion Modelling published in 2012 concluded a dense-rock equivalent (DRE) of 300 km3 and emissions dispersed over an area of around 3,700,000 km&sup2;. The accuracy of these numbers is of significance for marine geologists, climatologists, palaeontologists, paleo-anthropologists and researchers of related fields as the event coincides with a number of global and local phenomena, such as widespread discontinuities in archaeological sequences, climatic oscillations and biocultural modifications.</p><br>
<h2>Etymology</h2><br>
<p>The term Campanian refers to the Campanian volcanic arc located mostly but not exclusively in the region of Campania in southern Italy that stretches over a subduction zone created by the convergence of the African and Eurasian plates. It should not be confused with the Late Cretaceous stage Campanian.</p><br>
<p>The word ignimbrite was made by New Zealand geologist Patrick Marshall from Latin ignis (fire) and imber (shower)) and -ite. It means the deposits that form as a result of a pyroclastic eruption.</p><br>
<h2>Background</h2><br>
<p>The Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei "burning fields") caldera is a nested structure with a diameter of around 13 km. It is composed of the older Campanian Ignimbrite caldera, the younger Neapolitan Yellow Tuff caldera and widely scattered sub-aerial and submarine vents from which the most recent eruptions have originated. The Fields sit upon a Pliocene - Quaternary Extensional domain with faults, that run North-East to South-West and North-West to South-East from the margin of the Apennine thrust belt. The sequence of deformation has been subdivided into three periods.</p><br>
<h3>Phlegraean Periods</h3><br>
<p>The First Period, which includes the Campanian Ignimbrite Eruption was the most decisive era in the Phlegraean Fields&#39; geologic history. Beginning more than 40,000 years ago as the external caldera formed, subsequent caldera collapses and repeated volcanic activity took place within a limited area.</p><br>
<p>During the Second Period, the smaller Neapolitan Yellow Tuff eruption (Neapolitan Yellow Tuff or NYT) took place around 15,000 years ago.</p><br>
<p>Eruptions of the Third Period occurred during three intervals between 15,000 and 9500 years ago, 8600 and 8200 years ago and from 4800 to 3800 years ago.</p><br>
<p>The structure&#39;s magma chamber remains active as there apparently are solfataras, hot springs, gas emissions and frequent episodes of large-scale up- and downlift ground deformation (Bradyseism) do occur.</p><br>
<p>In 2008 it was discovered that the Phlegraean Fields and Mount Vesuvius have a common magma chamber at a depth of 10 km.</p><br>
<p>The region&#39;s volcanic nature has been recognized since Antiquity, investigated and studied for many centuries. Methodical scientific research began in the late 19th century. The yellow tuff stone was extensively quarried for centuries, which left large underground cavities that served as aqueducts and cisterns for the collection of rain water.</p><br>
<p>In 2016 Italian Volcanologists announced plans to drill a probe 1.9 mi deep into the Phlegraean Fields several years after the 2008 Campi Flegrei Deep Drilling Project which had aimed to drill a 3.5 km diagonal borehole in order to bring up rock samples and install seismic equipment. The project was suspended in 2010 due to safety problems.</p><br>
<h2>Eruptive sequence</h2><br>
<p>The CI eruption has been interpreted as the largest volcanic eruption of the past 200,000 years in Europe. Tephra deposits indicate two distinct plume forming phases, a Plinian and a co-ignimbrite, characterized by multiple caldera-forming eruptions.</p><br>
<h3>Plinian phase</h3><br>
<p>Evidence shows that the eruption was a single event lasting 2 to 4 days. It was triggered by abrupt changes in composition, properties and physical state in the melt or overpressure in the magma chamber. The eruption started with phreatomagmatic explosions, followed by a Plinian eruption column, fed by simultaneous extraction of two magma layers. The resulting ash plume is estimated to have been 70 km high. As gradually an unstable pulsating column formed, fed only by the most evolved magma due to upward migration of the fragmentation surface, reduced magma eruption rate, and/or activation of fractures, the Plinian phase ended. Emissions consisted of pumice and dark colored volcanic rock (scoria). The mafic minerals cover smaller areas than the more acidic members, also indicating a decrease of explosivity over the course of the eruption. The eruption column caused a large pumice-fall deposit to the east of the source area.</p><br>
<h3>Pyroclastic density currents</h3><br>
<p>The initial eruption was followed by a caldera collapse and a large pyroclastic flow, fed by the upper magma layer, a single flow unit with lateral variations in both pumice and lithic fragments, that covered an area of 30,000 km&sup2;. Currents that moved toward the North and the South overflowed 1,000 m mountain ranges and crossed the Gulf of Naples over the sea, extinguishing all life within a radius of about 100 km. Textural and morphological features of the deposits, and areal distribution suggests that the eruption was of the type of highly expanded low-temperature pyroclastic cloud.</p><br>

<h3>Ignimbrite deposit</h3><br>
<p>The ignimbrite is a gray, poorly to moderately welded, nearly saturated potassic trachyte, similar to many other trachytes of the Quaternary volcanic province of Campania. It consists of pumice and lithic fragments in a devitrified matrix that contains sanidine, lesser plagioclase rimmed by sanidine, two clinopyroxenes, biotite, and magnetite. The column collapse that generated the widespread ignimbrite deposit most likely occurred due to an increase of the Mass Eruption Rate (MER), (see Eruption column).</p><br>
<p>The immediate area was completely buried by thick layers of pyroclastic fragments, volcanic blocks, lapilli and ash. Two thirds of Campania sank under an up to 100 m thick layer of tuff. The greater ignimbrite deposit, mostly trachytic ash and pumice, covered an area of at least 7,000 km&sup2, encompassing most of the southern Italian peninsula and the eastern Mediterranean region.</p><br>
<p>Calculations of ash thickness measurements collected at 115 sites and a three dimensional ash dispersal model add up to a total amount of fallout material of 300 km of tephra across an area of 3,700,000 km&sup2;. Considering volume estimations of up to 300 km3 for the proximal pyroclastic density current deposits, the total bulk volume of the CI eruption is 680 km3 covering most of the eastern Mediterranean and ash clouds reaching as far as central Russia.</p><br>
<h2>Global impact</h2><br>
<p>The event&#39;s recent dating at 39,280±110 years ago draws considerable scholarly attention as it marks a time interval characterized by biocultural modifications in western Eurasia and widespread discontinuities in archaeological sequences, such as the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition. At several archaeological sites of South-eastern Europe, the ash separates the cultural layers containing Middle Palaeolithic and/or Earliest Upper Palaeolithic assemblages from the layers in which Upper Palaeolithic industries occur. At some sites the CI tephra deposit coincides with a long interruption of paleo-human occupation.</p><br>
<h3>Effect on climate</h3><br>
<p>The climatic importance of the eruption was tested in a three-dimensional sectional aerosol model that simulated the global aerosol cloud under glacial conditions. Authors calculate that up to 450 million kilograms (990 million pounds) of sulphur dioxide would have been accumulated into the atmosphere, driving down temperatures at least by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius (1.8-3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of 2 to 3 years. The Heinrich event 4 (H4), the name given to a cooling period, characterized by a break off of unusual large sections of ice from polar glaciers occurred around 40,000 years ago being well documented in the North Atlantic Ocean, although its impact on terrestrial areas is a matter of ongoing debate.</p><br>
<h2>Effect on living organisms</h2><br>
<p>Sulphur dioxide and chloride emissions caused acidic rains, fluorine-laden particles become incorporated into plant matter, potentially inducing dental fluorosis, replete with eye, lung and organ damage in animal populations.</p><br>
<h3>Neanderthal demise</h3><br>
<p>The eruption coincided also with the final decline of the Neanderthal in Europe. Environmental stress caused by the eruption has been invoked as a potential explanation for the extinction as well as discontinuities in Palaeolithic societies, although the climatic effects of the eruption alone are considered insufficient to account for the demise of the Neanderthals in Europe. The notion remains contested, nonetheless, some studies suggest, that significant volcanic cooling during the period immediately after the eruption might have severely disturbed these already precarious populations.</p><br>
<h3>Island biodiversity</h3><br>
<p>A joint study on the influence of the Late Quaternary climate change on island biodiversity has been published in 2016 in the Nature journal. This investigation on the consequences of abrupt climate changes for island biodiversity is apparently unprecedented. Established "island biogeographical models consider islands either as geologically static with biodiversity resulting from ecologically neutral immigration–extinction dynamics, or as geologically dynamic with biodiversity resulting from immigration–speciation–extinction dynamics influenced by changes in island characteristics over millions of years." Researchers argue that "climatic oscillations over short geological periods are likely to affect sea levels and cause huge changes in island size, isolation and connectivity, orders of magnitude faster than the geological processes of island formation..." Results suggest that "post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) changes in island characteristics, especially in area, have left a strong imprint on the present diversity of endemic species."</p><br>
<h3>Laschamp event</h3><br>
<p>In 2012 the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences has published a study on likely causal connections between the Laschamp magnetic reversal and the eruption as "sediment cores from the Black Sea show that during this period, a compass at the Black Sea would have pointed to the south instead of north." Evidence seems to be limited and the publication is no longer publicly available.</p><br>
<p>Yesemek Quarry and Sculpture Workshop is an open-air museum and archaeological site in Gaziantep Province, Turkey. The site was a quarry in Hittite times and occupies a 100000 m area, making it the largest known stonemasonry workshop from the ancient Near East.</p><br>
<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>The museum is to the south of the village of Yesemek in İslahiye ilçe (district) of Gaziantep Province at 36&deg;53&prime;35&Prime;N latitude, 36&deg;44&prime;40&Prime;E longitude. It is situated on the western slopes of the mounteneous area and to the east of Tahtalı Dam reservoir. Its distance to village is about 1.5 km, to İslahiye is 23 km and to Gaziantep is 113 km. Visitors can drive to the site from Gaziantep, İskenderun or Antakya.</p><br>
<h2>History of the excavations</h2><br>
<p>The ruins were partially unearthed by Austrian archaeologist Felix von Luschan during his excavations at Zincirli to the north of the area in 1890. Between 1957-1961 Turkish archaeologist Bahadır Alkım continued excavations, revealing around 200 sculptures. The most recent work was carried out in the 1990s by İlhan Temizsoy, director of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and brought another hundred objects to light. The site is now an open-air museum administered by the Gaziantep Museum of Archaeology.</p><br>
<h2>History of the site</h2><br>
<p>The site was a workshop of sculpture. It was established by the Hittite emperor Suppiluliuma I (r.1344–1322 BC). With the collapse of the Hittite Empire, activity probably ceased, but the workshop was again active in the ninth century BC, when Yesemek was part of the Aramaic kingdom of Sam&#39;al. The artefacts from this period show Aramaic and Assyrian influence. In the 8th century BC, the region came under Assyrian control and the site was abandoned once more. It is not clear whether the artisans simply stopped working or were transported to the Assyrian capital. The area around the workshop is mostly covered by basalt and the raw material of the sculptures is basalt. The total area of the workshop is about 100,000 m&sup2;. Among the 300 unearthed items there are sphinx, lions, chariot, gods etc.</p><br>
<h3>Sculptures</h3><br>
<p>There are several basic types of sculpture on the site. The majority are sphinxes with a female head and a lion&#39;s body or lions (some of which are winged). These sphinxes and lions were probably intended to flank the gates of Hittite cities, palaces and temples, and are very similar to the door sculptures found at Hattusa and Alaca Höyük. In addition, there are groups of mountain gods with arms crossed over their chests, reliefs of hunting scenes, and a bear-person. These objects are believed to be special commissions. The mountain gods closely resemble the ones that were used as supports in the well sanctuary at Eflatun Pınar. Sculptures can be seen in all stages of production. A particularly noteworthy sphinx found at Zincirli is now on display in the Museum of Gaziantep.</p><br>
<h3>Stoneworking</h3><br>
<p>In the quarry, large blocks of red basalt were broken up, by striking pre-existing cracks with hammer and chisel. Wooden wedges were inserted into these cracks and water was poured over them. The waterlogged wood expanded, splitting off large fragments. The rough shape of figures was carved from these with a chisel and the outer surface was smoothed. Fine carving followed and then the piece was polished. The final details were generally not done in the workshop, but at their final destinations. How they were transported from the quarry is not clear.</p><br>
<h2>World Heritage Status</h2><br>
<p>This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on April 4, 2002 in the Cultural category.</p><br>
<p>Vespasianus Titus Tunnel, located in Samandağ, Hatay Province in southern Turkey, is an ancient water tunnel built during the Roman period.</p><br>
<p>The tunnel is situated nearby Çevlik village in Samandağ district of Hatay Province. It is located at the foot of Nur Mountains about 35 km southwest of Antakya, the historical harbor city Antioch on the Orontes in eastern Mediterranean coast.</p><br>
<p>The tunnel is part of a water diversion system consisting of a dam, a short approach channel, the first tunnel section, a short intermediary channel, the second tunnel section and a long discharge channel.</p><br>
<p>The construction of the tunnel was ordered by Roman emperor Vespasian (reigned 69–79 AD) to divert the floodwaters running down the mountain and threatening the harbor. It was built by digging the rocks using manpower only. The construction began in the Vespasian time, continued under his son Titus (r. 79–81 AD) and his successors, completed in the 2nd century, during the reign of Antoninus Pius (r. 138–161). An inscription carved in rock at the entrance of the first tunnel section shows the names of Vespasianus and Titus, and another one at the discharge tunnel the name of Antonius.</p><br>
<h2>World Heritage Site status</h2><br>
<p>The tunnel was added to the tentative list in the cultural category of UNESCO World Heritage Site on April 15, 2014.</p><br>
<p>The Colonel Ephraim and Sarah Doolittle Farm is a historic farm property on Doolittle Road in Shoreham, Vermont. It is one of the oldest colonial farm properties in western Vermont, established in 1766 by Colonel Ephraim Doolittle, a veteran of the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Doolittle Farm is located in northern Shoreham, on 180 acre bounded on the west by Vermont Route 22A, the south by Doolittle Road, and the north by the Shoreham-Bridport town line. The western portion of the farm is wooded, and includes Prickly Ash Brook, which flows northeasterly across the property. The eastern portion is open, with fields of pasture and agriculture. The farm complex is set on the north side of Doolittle Road, east of the brook between the cleared and wooded areas. In addition to the c. 1800 farmhouse, the complex includes a carriage barn, three agricultural barns from the mid-to-late 19th century, and several smaller outbuildings. The farmhouse is a particularly fine example of early Federal period architecture, built of brick laid in common bond and covered by a hip roof.</p><br>
<p>The farm was established in 1766 by Colonel Ephraim Doolittle, a colonial militia officer who helped build the Crown Point Military Road, the area&#39;s first road, part of which runs along Doolittle Road. Doolittle established a gristmill and sawmill on Prickly Ash Brook, whose foundational remnants survive. Doolittle was one of the founding proprietors of Shoreham, chartered in 1788, and was a prominent local citizen for many years. The house, dating about 1800, was probably built by Job Lane Howe, a prominent area builder credited with building other fine Federal period houses in the region.</p><br>
<p>The West Fairlee Center Church is a historic church building at Middlebrook and Bear Notch Roads in West Fairlee, Vermont. Built in 1855, it is a fine and little-altered example of rural Greek Revival architecture, also notable for the association of its congregation with Nathaniel Niles, a prominent local minister, landowner, and politician. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The West Fairlee Center Church stands prominently in the rural village of West Fairlee Center, at the north side of the triangular junction of Middlebrook and Bear Notch Roads. It is a single-story wood frame structure, with a gabled metal roof and clapboarded exterior. The roof is topped by a tower, its first stage crowned by a cornice, and the second stage consisting of an octagonal louvered belfry with paneled pilasters at the angled sides. It is topped by a steeple that is a 1973 replacement of the original. The main facade is three bays wide, with corner pilasters rising to an entablature and fully pedimented gable. There are two entrances flanking a central window; each is framed by paneled pilasters and a corniced entablature, and topped by a smaller window. The interior has a vestibule under a balcony, which has a pressed tin roof and chamfered square columns for support. The main sanctuary has plaster walls with wainscoting, and its ceiling is also pressed tin. The bench pews are original to the building, as is the pulpit area; the organ dates to 1893.</p><br>
<p>The town of West Fairlee was separated from Fairlee in 1797, supposedly in part due to a personal dispute between two major landowners, Col. Isaac Morey and Nathaniel Niles. Niles was a major landowner in West Fairlee, and often contended with Morey for a seat in the state legislature. Early Congregationalist gatherings were held at his house (which still stands to the south), prior to the construction of the first church in 1811. The present church was built in 1855 to accommodate the town&#39;s growing population. Its location, at roughly the geographic town center, was originally the economic and civic center of the community, but was eclipsed by the present village center later in the 19th century, when it arose as to support local mining operations.</p><br>
<p>The Battery Street Historic District encompasses one of the oldest developed areas of Burlington, Vermont. With a history dating to 1790, this area, south of downtown Burlington and initially bounded roughly by Main, St. Paul, and Maple Streets, and Lake Champlain, this area includes a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial uses, with architecture spanning from its early period to the 20th century, including one of the city&#39;s oldest houses. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and has twice been enlarged, extending west to South Union Street.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The city of Burlington, Vermonts largest, was chartered in 1765 and saw early settlement in the 1770s. Significant development was delayed by the American Revolutionary War. The area south of what is now its downtown area became an early center of commerce, and it was at the home Gideon King (still standing on King Street) where the citys proprietors platted out its street grid. The wharves on Lake Champlain were controlled by King and that area has remained a nexus of commerce and transport through the transition from water-based transport to rail-based, and then also truck-based, transport. The area east of Kings wharf and south of Main Street developed as a transport support area, with warehouses for the storage of goods awaiting shipment, and was augmented by light industry, including the manufacture of items, such as paper tubes and boxes. The waterfront was also the site of Burlingtons only shipyard. Areas further inland were also developed residentially, but today reflect a mix of uses.</p><br>
<p>When first listed on the National Register in 1977, the district extended east from Lake Champlain to St. Paul Street, and south from Main Street (generally excluding Main Street addresses) to Maple Street. A further increase in 2014 added addresses on Pine Street south of Maple Street.</p><br>
<p>The Mint is a fortified house and National Monument located in Carlingford, County Louth, Ireland.</p><br>

<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>This castle, variously called a fortified house or tower house, derived its name from the license to mint coins granted to Carlingford in 1467 by Edward IV. However, the present tower comes from later, either the 15th or 16th century. It is believed to have housed one of Carlingford&#39;s wealthy merchant families (perhaps the Marmions); however, the lack of a fireplace and the strength of the defences suggest that it may indeed have served as a mint. Against this is the fact that no coin minted at Carlingford has ever been found.</p><br>
<h2>Building</h2><br>
<p>The Mint is three storeys high and made mainly of limestone. There is a battlemented chemin de ronde on the roof, with loopholes for muskets. A doorway is protected by machicolation.</p><br>
<p>The ground and first storey ogee windows (five in total) face onto the street, with carvings of a horse, a bust of a man, a bird, a snake and Celtic interlace ornament which reflects a revival of interest in Celtic art in the 15th–16th centuries. They also have hood mouldings and mullions.</p><br>
<p>East Island is an island of the Andaman Islands. It belongs to the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.</p><br>

The United States land offices were the federal government agency that was primarily responsible for the sale and of public land to individual purchasers. Michigan&#39;s first land office was established in Detroit in 1804. The US Land office in White Pigeon was the third office to open in Michigan.,</p><br>
<p>The White Piegon land office was located on the Chicago Road (Sauk Trail), which linked Chicago and Detroit. The first settler in Kent County, Michigan to buy land from the office was Louis Campau in October of 1833.</p><br>
<p>The USA started issuing land in Michigan after the Treaty of Chicago, in which the Potawatomi and other tribes turned over their land, was signed in 1821. The White Pigeon land office operated for about 4 years from 1831-1834. During that time over a quarter million acres of land were sold from this office at a rate of $1.25 per acre.</p><br>

<p>The Wilson Alwyn "Snowflake" Bentley House is a historic house on Nashville Road in Jericho, Vermont. Built about 1860, it was the lifelong home of Wilson Bentley , the towns best known resident and one of worlds innovators in the photography of snowflakes. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Bentley House stands in a rural area of southeastern Jericho, on the south side of Nashville Road a short way west of Bentley Lane. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. Extending to either side of the central block are 1-1/2 story cross-gabled ells, the right one fronted by a hip-roof porch. Windows are capped by shallow-pitch peaked lintels, and there is a tin snowflake decoration in a triangular panel at the peak of the central gable. The ells each have front-facing gable dormers with steeply pitched roofs. A third ell projects to the house&#39;s rear; it is there that Wilson Bentley had his photographic studio.</p><br>
<p>The house was built about 1860 and enlarged by the addition to the west about 1887. Wilson Bentley was the grandson of one of Jericho&#39;s early settlers, and lived here his entire life. Largely self-educated, he developed at an early age equipment and techniques for capturing microphotographs of snowflakes, a subject on which he became a well-known authority.</p><br>
<p>The District Six Schoolhouse is a historic school building on Elmendorf Road in Shoreham, Vermont. Built about 1833 and now converted into a residence, this modest stone structure is one of Vermont&#39;s oldest surviving district schoolhouses. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The former District Six Schoolhouse stands in a rural area of northeastern Shoreham, on the southwest side of Elmendorf Road. It is a modest single-story stone structure, measuring just 20 x, with a gabled roof. It is built of course rubble limestone and covered by a standing seam metal roof. The street-facing facade has two bays, with the entrance in a recess on the left and a sash window on the right, and has a half-round window in the gable. The southeast roof face has a gabled wood-frame dormer, part of alterations made to convert the building to residential use. A single-story wood frame ell extends to the rear.</p><br>
<p>The school was built in 1833 out of locally quarried limestone, and is a good example of late Federal period vernacular architecture. It is one of a number of surviving stone district schools in the region. It remained in use as a schoolhouse until the 1940s. After standing vacant for some years, it was rehabilitated and converted into a residence.</p><br>
<p>The West Newbury Village Historic District encompasses the modest rural country village of West Newbury, Vermont. It is located at the junction of Tucker Mountain, Snake, and Tyler Farm Roads, and is relatively little altered since its 19th-century development. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The West Newbury area was first settled by colonists in the 1770s, with the small village center growing in the following decades to serve the outlying agricultural area of southern Newbury. The local meetinghouse was built in 1833, and in 1841 Samuel Eastman built the store (now converted to apartments) at the junction of Tyler Farm and Snake Roads. The village is home to Newburys only surviving district schoolhouse, now owned by the local historical society. Unlike Newburys other villages, which benefited from their location on the Connecticut River and later on the railroad, the village has always been of modest rural character.</p><br>
<p>The historic district is basically linear, running from the junction of Tyler Farm and Snake Roads southward along Tyler Farm Road to Rogers Hill Road. Its buildings are of wood frame construction, one and two stories in height, and almost all were built before 1900. Its few 20th century intrusions, including the c. 1975 post office, are architecturally sympathetic to the village&#39;s historic character.</p><br>
<p>Ballyallaban ringfort or sometimes An Rath  is an earthen ringfort south of Ballyvaughan in the Burren area, in County Clare, Ireland. It is a National Monument of Ireland.</p><br>

<p>The fort lies right next to the R480 road between the village of Ballyvaughan and Leamaneh Castle. It is located in the townland of Ballyallaban, parish of Rathborney.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The ringfort is sizable with an internal diameter of around 100 feet (200 feet including the moat) and is in good condition, although trees grow on much of the structure. The ramparts were built with the earth dug out of the moat, which still fills with water after rain.</p><br>
<p>The walls were originally even higher and the moat deeper than they are now. The embankment likely was topped by a wooden palisade.</p><br>
<p>The national monument number 648 actually consists of two separate forts: the earthen Ballyallaban ringfort and the nearby stone fort of Cahermore.</p><br>
<p>Greystone Villa-Cabin 18 is a historic building located in the Santa Ana Mountains within Cleveland National Forest, in Orange County, Southern California. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>It is located near Hot Spring Canyon on the Ortega Highway (CA Route 74).</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The cabin was built between 1929 and 1930 by Frank Z. Phillips, a contractor from Los Angeles. Its NRHP Architectural Classification lists the building under "Rustic/Folk Art/Twentieth Century with Craftsman Features." On Cabin 18, small stones have been used to label the cabin with its number. In addition, the castle inspired stone and mortar structure is a well maintained example of southern Californian rustic vernacular of the early twentieth century.</p><br>
<p>The collection of cabins built along the Ortega Highway is a result of the Term Occupancy Act, approved by Congress in 1915. The purpose was to encourage residents to build second homes within the boundaries of national forests in order to boost the role of the Forest Service. The homes built at this time utilized natural materials found surrounding the construction sites such as cleared trees and rocks. Large rocks were used in the foundations and walls, while smaller ones decorated the outside walls enhancing the architecture.</p><br>
<p>According to the National Register of Historic Places, "Having recreation residences on national forests is a significant chapter in the history of federal management of public lands, as well as in the history of outdoor recreation. California was probably the state where the Forest Service first issued permits, and it certainly has become the state where the idea reached fullest expression."</p><br>
<p>Greenmount Motte is a motte and National Monument in County Louth, Ireland.</p><br>

<p>Greenmount Motte is located 2.9 km west of Annagassan, overlooking the Dee Valley.</p><br>
<h2>History and archaeology</h2><br>
<p>Motte-and-bailey castles were a primitive type of castle built after the Norman invasion, a mound of earth topped by a wooden palisade and tower.</p><br>
<p>The motte at Greenmount was formerly known as Droim Chatha ("Battle Ridge", Anglicised Dromcath or Drumcath). A Nicholas of Drumcath (Nicholaus de Dromcath) is mentioned in a documents of 1310 and 1328.</p><br>
<p>The foundations of an elongated chamber (1.5 × 1 m in size, 5.5 m below the summit) are visible in the bailey.</p><br>
<p>A scabbard-mount with runic inscriptions (, "Domnal Seal&#39;s-head owned this sword") was found in excavation, but it believed to be long pre-Norman, indicating that the motte was constructed on the site of an earlier tumulus. Also found were animal bones, charcoal, burnt earth, a bronze axe and a bone harp peg with friction marks.</p><br>
<p>Greenmount was a camp ground for Catholic Irish forces in the Irish Rebellion of 1641. It was excavated in 1830, causing a cave-in, and again in 1870.</p><br>
<p>Dowsby Hall is an early 17th-century house situated in Dowsby, Lincolnshire, England, and 6 mi to the north of Bourne. Originally a much grander house, attributed to the architect John Thorpe, it was converted to farm house in the late 18th century. It is listed Grade II*. From about 1920 to 1987, it was the home of Henry Burtt, who suggested the idea of the radio programme The Archers to the BBC producer Godfrey Baseley.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The land on which the house stands was acquired by Thomas Rigdon of Chartham in Kent when he married Anne heiress of Anthony Villiers, whose mother had been a member of the Roos family, who had lived in Dowsby for eight generations. It the passed to his son Sir William Rigdon who died in 1610. At this point the property was purchased by Richard Burrell, a citizen and grocer of London. It is not clear if Sir William had started building the hall at this time or if the hall was built for Richard Burrell. An altered rainwater head, dated 1630, might even indicte that the building could be that late. The Dowsby Hall remained in Burrell ownership into the 18th. century and passed by marriage to Thomas Foster, who sold the hall with its farmland to a Mr Green in 1798. It is thought that the hall may have been in a dilapidated state by this point. John Green appears to have had demolished the southern portion of the house and the main entrance. The house was now extensively remodeled internally and the front door moved to the north side. The house had been drastically reduced in size presumally so that it would now be suitable to use as a farmhouse. It may have been at this time or earlier that some of the windows of the house had been bricked up, presumably to avoid Window tax. John Green was succeeded by James Dunn, a successful sheep breeder and then by the Dean family who successfully exported sheep to Argentina and they gave the village its church clock and the village hall as a First World War Memorial.</p><br>
<p>Around 1920 the Dowsby Hall estate was purchased by Trinity College, Cambridge and Henry Burtt became the tenant farmer. Burtt was a substantial and innovatie farmer, farming land in Dowsby, Rippingale and elsewhere. At one point Burtt was the largest producer of blackcurrents in Britain- his blackcurrants were juiced to provide fruit juice for Ribena - and was the moving force for the establishment of the Lincolnshire Quality seed scheme, which was a forerunner of worldwide seed quality control. In 1946, the BBC Radio producer Godfrey Baseley, later to become first editor of The Archers, came to Rippingale to make a programme called Farm Visit. Henry Burtt and his son Stephen showed him their land all round Rippingale and explained their unusual crops and methods. Two years later, the BBC organised a national conference, to discuss how to get more farmers listening to radio. It took place in Birmingham Town Hall on June 3, 1948 and produced nothing new until Burtt stood up and famously said: "What we want is a farming ‘Dick Barton&#39;," and sat down again, to laughter from the audience.</p><br>
<p>Burtt then worked with Baseley on the idea and Baseley seems to have modelled the characters of Dan and Phil Archer on Henry Burtt and his son Stephen. Henry Burtt died in 1987 at the age of 94, and in that year Trinity College sold Dowsby Hall, but retained the surrounding farmland.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture</h2><br>
<h3>Description</h3><br>
<p>The front of the house is in limestoneashlar on the east facade and the rebuilt south face, while the north and west sides are in coursed Rubble masonry. The source of the limestone is likely to be from the Ancaster stone or Heydour quarries. A three storey house double pile house, with ridge roofs with stone coped gables, crowned with small knopped obelisks. Four chimney stacks in central valley between roofs, one with 3 tall angle shafts, the other 3 with tall paired angle shafts. Rainwater head or Launder box dated 1630 drains the gulley between the parallel ridges on the north side. Four southern bays of the original seven bay east front demolished in late18th century leaving three northern bays. Mullioned windows, some of which have recently been re-fenestrated, having been previously blocked with brick. Projecting moulded cornice above corbelled out bay window at third floor level above the canted or bay oriel windows of the first and second floors. A similar moulded cornice crowned with a gablet with obelisks on apex and kneelers above the windows of the two other remaining bays.</p><br>
<p>Inside a billiards room with 17th. century oak fielded panelling with chamfered beam and small panelled cupboard doors flanking fireplace. The original hall has been split with the insertion an of early 18th. century bolection moulded panelled dining room and a mid-18th. century marbled panelled drawing room.</p><br>
<h3>Architectural attribution</h3><br>
<p>There is considerable uncertainty as to was the architect of Dowsby Hall and for whom it was built. David Roberts in his original study published in 1973, reconstructed the frontage and layout of the Hall. He suggested on comparison with similarities in drawings in John Thorpe&#39;s book of plans in the Sir John Soane Museum that John Thorpe is likely to have been the architect of Dowsby Hall. John Thorpe has been accepted as the architect in subsequent published literature. Sir Howard Colvin cautions against too readily accepting Thorpe as the architect, as his book of plans contains new projects, surveys of existing buildings, and others that are probably copies of designs by other surveyors. One of the plans also shows alterations, which may imply that another architect was involved in the design of house and the plans were changed.</p><br>
<p>Rockmarshall Court Tomb is a court cairn and National Monument located on the Cooley Peninsula, Ireland.</p><br>

<p>Rockmarshall Court Tomb is located immediately southwest of Rockmarshall House, on the southern slopes of Annaloughan Mountain.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Rockmarshall has been settled since the Mesolithic (c. 5700 BC on); excavation of a midden shows late tools, oysters and periwinkles.</p><br>
<p>The Carlingford Lough/Cooley Peninsula region was low in Mesolithic activity in comparison to Strangford Lough and Belfast Lough, due to the low quality flint.</p><br>
<p>Carlingford and the Mournes could also have provided berries and nuts in season, and wild boar. A local population survived at Rockmarshall into the Neolithic, and the court cairn was built c. 3500 BC.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The gallery is 15 m long and at the northeast end is a broad court, its arc formed by six stones. The stones used are very low and some have fallen over. There are five chambers with each chamber narrower than the first. There is a lot of cairn material scattered around the gallery.</p><br>
<p>St. Olaf Auditorium, also known as the St. Olaf Opera House and Auditorium, is a historic building located in St. Olaf, Iowa, United States. The city was able to complete the auditorium in 1939 with the assistance of the Public Works Administration  and labor provided under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration . Both are New Deal programs that sought to relieve the economic effects of the Great Depression. The building is a two-story structure composed of native rubble limestone that follows the PWA Moderne style. It has served as a community center that has hosted a variety of social activities, including recreational, athletic, cultural, educational, and civic functions. The auditorium was used occasionally for vaudeville and minstrel shows. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.</p><br>
<p>The Franklin Hotel is a historic building located in Strawberry Point, Iowa, United States. The Franklin Hotel and Land Company was established in 1902 for the purpose of building a modern hotel to serve the community. They hired the Independence, Iowa architectural firm of Netcott and Donnan to design the building, which was constructed by E.M. Loop of Hopkinton, Iowa. The hotel opened on February 12, 1903, and the building has served that purpose ever since. The two-story brick building combines the Neoclassical and Romanesque Revival styles. It sits on the northeast corner of an intersection and its rounded corner follows the curve of the intersection. The commercial space adjacent to the north is also a part of this building with hotel rooms on the second floor. Railroad tracks at one time were located just north of the hotel, which served the passengers from the railroad and later travelers from the highways that run past the hotel. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.</p><br>
<p>Terror Bay  is an Arctic waterway in the Kitikmeot Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is located in the south western side of King William Island. The entrance to the bay is marked by Fitzjames Island on the west and Irving Islands to the east. The Bay opens to Queen Maud Gulf.</p><br>
<p>In 2016, Arctic Research Foundation researchers on board the Martin Bergmann announced that they had found the wreck of HMS Terror, one of the ships of John Franklin&#39;s lost expedition in Terror Bay, led there by a tip from Inuk crewman Sammy Kogvik, from Gjoa Haven, who reported seeing a mast protruding from the ice in Terror Bay during a hunting trip in 2010.</p><br>
<p>The bay was officially named by the Geographical Names Board of Canada in 1910. The bay was one of a series of landmarks along the waters explored by Terror and the route of Franklins lost expedition named in honour of HMS Terror and the expeditions other ship HMS Erebus, making the location of the wreck in a bay of the same name a coincidence.</p><br>
<p>Smith Island is an island of the Andaman Islands. It belongs to the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.</p><br>

<p>Smith Island beach is noted for turtle nesting during seasons.</p><br>
<p>Lake Harris is a endorheic salt lake in the Australian state of South Australia to the north of the Eyre Peninsula located about 530 km northwest of the state capital of Adelaide within the gazetted localities of Lake Harris and Wilgena.</p><br>
<p>Lake Harris was named by the Government of South Australia after the surveyor, Charles Hope Harris, who discovered and mapped it in 1874.</p><br>
<p>Lake Harris is aligned in a north-easterly direction with an overall length of about 20 mi and a maximum width of about 10 mi. It extent includes “a number of Islands” described as being formed from “Quaternary deposits with extensive sand cover.”</p><br>
<p>Lake Harris along with the nearby lakes of Everard and Gairdner, form the extent of the protected area known as the Lake Gairdner National Park.</p><br>
<p>Cahermore ringfort or sometimes Caher Mór or "Ballyallaban stone fort" is a ringfort south of Ballyvaughan in the Burren area, in County Clare, Ireland. It is a National Monument of Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The fort lies right next to the R480 road between the village of Ballyvaughan and Leamaneh Castle. It is located in the townland of Ballyallaban, parish of Rathborney.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The walls are up to 9 feet thick and 9 feet high, with two faces of large, well-fitted blocks with rubble filled in between. The lintel and building remains inside the fort are considered late medieval features. Next to the entryway are guard chambers, which could indicate that the former inhabitants were of high status.</p><br>
<p>The national monument number 648 actually consists of two separate forts: the stone fort of Cahermore and the nearby earthen Ballyallaban ringfort.</p><br>
<h2>Excavation</h2><br>
<p>A limited excavation occurred after the lintel stone fell down in the late 1990s. A coin from 1690 was found.</p><br>
<p>According to the National Monuments Service: "Excavation (Licence no. 99E0506) in this area took place in June 1999 as the entranceway was blocked with rubble and the lintel had fallen across the entrance passage. The excavations revealed that the structures around the entrance were a 14th/15th-century addition to the pre-existing fort. A scallop shell from below the foundations was radiocarbon dated to AD 1308. The lintel was replaced and the entranceway was consolidated in 2001."</p><br>
<p>The District School No. 1 is a historic one-room schoolhouse on Lake Road in Panton, Vermont. Built about 1818, the stone building is one of Vermont&#39;s oldest district schoolhouses. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Panton&#39;s former district 1 schoolhouse stands at the junction of Lake and Spaulding Roads in the rural western portion of the town. It is a single-story structure, built out of locally quarried limestone. It measures 25 x, and is covered by a gabled roof. The window bays have tooled white marble sills and lintels, which contrast with the roughly finished gray stone walls. Triangular marble stones are also set at the peak of each gable. The interior of the building is a large single chamber, which has been much altered due to its 20th-century use as a chicken coop.</p><br>
<p>The school was built about 1818, the year the town divided its territory into four school districts. This school and the other district schools were built out of limestone quarried from outcrops found on the west side of Dead Creek. The school saw regular use into the first quarter of the 20th century, and was sold in 1932 to a local farmer. He converted it into a chicken coop. At the time of its listing on the National Register in 1980, it was vacant and in dilapidated condition.</p><br>
<p>The Harlie Whitcomb Farm is a historic farm property on George Street in Orange, Vermont. The property, which includes a pre-1869 farmhouse, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, because the 10 acre property also included an octagonal three-story barn, one of a very few known in the state. The barn has since been demolished.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Harlie Whitcomb Farm is located about 0.5 mi north of Orange&#39;s village center, on the south side of George Street a short way north of the town cemetery. The 10 acre of the farm are set between the cemetery and a rise to the west. The house is a 1-1/2 story Cape style house, with a metal roof and clapboarded exterior. Its front facade is six bays wide, with the main entrance in the left center bay. A garage and shed stand on the property south of the house.</p><br>
<p>In 1905-06, Harlie Whitcomb built a three-story eight-sided barn at a remove to the south of the house. Because of the relatively unaltered condition of the barn, which had by the 1970s fallen out of regular use, the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Octagonal barns underwent a revival around the turn of the 20th century, as an efficient means of feeding and caring for dairy cattle, and this barn was one of a dwindling number of surviving octagonal barns from the at period. The barn has since been demolished, and only foundational remnants survive.</p><br>
<p>The Buell Street–Bradley Street Historic District encompasses a small residential area just to the east of downtown Burlington, Vermont. Roughly bounded by Pearl, South Willard, and College Streets, and Orchard Terrace, the area was developed between about 1890 and 1910, representing one of the last significant neighborhoods built up near the downtown area. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Burlingtons early economic history was dominated by activities on the waterfront of Lake Champlain. By the 1850s, lumber had also become a major industry in the city, and manufacturing and retailing also became important in the second half of the 19th century. Development of the Buell Street–Bradley Street area, was delayed in part due to its geography, which included a steep ravine. A railroad line was built through the ravine in 1849, but was later abandoned, and was filled in during the 1860s. This made possible the extension of South Union Street through the area, and opened the area between it and South Willard for development. The area was by the 1880s the last undeveloped area in the proximity of the citys growing downtown, and development proceeded from the late 1880s to about 1930.</p><br>
<p>The historic district is bounded on the north by Pearl Street, the east by South Willard Street, and the south by College Street, but not include any buildings on those major through streets. It is bounded on the west by Orchard Terrace and South Union Street, which are just east of South Winooski Avenue, one of the citys downtown thoroughfares. Most of the districts buildings are residential, one to three stories in height, and built of wood. Stylistically, the large majority are in a late Queen Anne Victorian style, although there are examples of Dutch Colonial, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow buildings. At first occupied by main middle-class residents working in the downtown area and the city&#39;s manufacturing plants, it is now mainly populated by college students attending nearby schools, principally the University of Vermont, whose campus is east of South Willard.</p><br>
<p>Clermont Cairn, also called Black Mountain Chambered Cairn , is a chambered cairn and National Monument located in the Cooley Mountains, County Louth, Republic of Ireland.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>Clermont Cairn is located atop Black Mountain in the Cooley Mountains, which overlook the Cooley Peninsula. The mountain itself, and the radio transmission site are also sometimes called "Clermont Carn."</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Clermont Cairn was constructed in the early Neolithic, c. 4000–3500 BC, and forms part of the Clyde-Carlingford group of court cairns. The mound has been disturbed by quarrying and blasting.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>This circular hilltop cairn is 21 m in diameter and over 4 m high, with the remains of a trapezoidal cairn 3.5 m long in the southwest part. Three lintels are in position and the rear part is corbelled. Surrounding this was a court (5.5 × 7 m) and a gallery containing at least two burial chambers.</p><br>
